Q & A on Juicing with The Raw Food Mum

These were some questions that were posted on The Raw Food Mums Facebook page during our 14 day Juice Challenge!

Q: So you just have juice for breaky or any other meal or do you eat something as well? What do you eat for breaky?

A: At the moment we are doing a juice challenge so I have been having a bug juice first thing in the morning. However I have been having green smoothies and juices for breakfast for years now!  They tend to last me till about 2pm :)

*******

Q: I noticed you chop up you vegetables prior to juicing. Is there a reason why you do so? I would love to purchase your ‘fancy’ juicer you posted a review about recently (am saving up) but currently just have an older breville juicer, which I am hoping will blow up soon so I can buy your one! I do juices daily, but just put whole veggies/stalks through. Is there such huge benefit to purchasing a premium juicer as you sell in your online shop? ie need less veggies/fruits to gain higher volume of liquid? Less pulp etc. with a family of 5 it has to be cost effective for me and save money on the raw vegetable product to justify cost in the long run. Hope that makes sense and thank you for your posts, I look forward to reading them daily.

A: With cold pressed juicers  you need to chop up the vegetables prior to juicing as the literally being pressed against the auger unlike the centrigual juicers that literally gobble up fruits whole. The difference is in the quality of the juice and the pulp – A cold pressed juicer will produce pulp that is literally dry, whereas the centrifgual juicers like the breville you still have moist pulp ( and its been heated ) In the long run you are going to save money as you need less vegetables to get the same result and they contain all the enzymes as they havent been heated when you use the cold pressed juicer like the Oscar DA 1000!

*******

Q: Is there a descent cheaper juicer thats pretty good? i haven’t juiced before but want to start & not spend over $250max on one… and do u add supplements also? powders? what would u recommend to add?

A: If you are just starting out juicing a juicer like the breville is a great one to start with!  Juicing has to be a commitment if you going to spend the $$ on a cold pressed juicer. By starting out on a cheaper one – your going to find out if your committed., once you are then upgrade!  Yeap we add Vitamineral green to our green juices ( its your multi vitamin in a green powder)

*******

Q: I just bought a cold pressed Semak juicer for $400. Although I love I think your juicer can probably handle tougher fruits than mine. With Kale, do you add the stalks? I am just using the leaves at the moment.

A: Yeap stalks and all! A trick with greens when using a cold pressed juicer when you sometimes hear a grinding noise  – is to add a teaspoon of linseed oil through your juicer, it basically lubricates the augur so the greens are not being pressed dry!

*******

Q: With the juicer I seem to waste so much. All the pulp and fiber doesn’t get consumed. I want to be able to blend/liquidify the whole fruit or veg. Any suggestions?

A: Use it in veggie Crackers – we  juice veggies first and give it to our dog, then we juice the fruit. If you want the pulp make Green smoothies!

*******

Q: Do you pre Make your juice for the entire day and put In mason jars or bottle how much produce would you need to need to do that?

A: Post —> How to store your juice

MicroOrganics Green Nutritionals Review

Why Super foods?  Superfoods have earned their distinction by having great nutritional value, they may also improve nutrition where it may be lacking, strengthen the immune system, increasing energy levels and keeping those organs healthy. I have been using super foods since I started eating raw food. And Issy has had spirulina from around 8 months of age in her green smoothies.

A few months ago I started doing some research trying to find  green super foods that were made and or owned by an Australian company – and were of quality and substance, and I came across MicroOrganics Green Nutritionals.- so I emailed them and simply asked if I could try their products out! Not only was I sent a sample of every product they stock, I was also sent detailed information on the benefits of each and where they are made etc..

It has now been a few months since we started using their products, not only are we loving them but there were a few very simple and telling signs that  I noticed straight away!Comparison of MicroOrganics Spirulina and generic brands - the raw food mum

  1. Color  – The spoon on the top is Green Nutritionals Spirulina, the bottom spoon is another brand!  CHECK OUT THE COLOUR DIFFERENCE ALONE! look at how significantly darker it is!

  1. Taste - I have never tasted Spirulina that honestly tastes as good as Green Nutritionals. My new favorite green smoothie is  – Green Nutritionals Spirulina, almond milk, banana and blueberries! Seriously it is amazing! I was like Hamish seriously taste this! I honestly could not get over the difference in taste from the brand we had been previously been using.

20131119-171000.jpg

The other product they make is the Green Calcium!  I wish I was aware of this when I was breastfeeding Isabelle – as it is something I would have put in my smoothies daily, and I will definitely be doing that for my next pregnancy and my future breastfeeding experience! I am also adding this to our ( including Isabelle’s ) smoothies daily.   I know that neither of us are going to be lacking in calcium now we have started to include this in our diet – and its something that as a family that eats raw food we need to be very aware of.

Here are some of the benefits of each of the products Green Nutritionals make. It is also the reason after trialling the products that we decided to stock them in the store. Along with Vitamineral greens, they are the only Green superfood powders we will be using from now on!

Spirulina

20131119-171215.jpg

Spirulina is a microscopic spiral shaped, blue-green vegetable algae.  It is nature’s richest whole-food source of complete protein. Rich in GLA, it also contains important B complexes including bio-available B12 and other essential organic, whole-food minerals and trace elements.  Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina is grown on the Big Island of Hawaii, USA without the use or any chemical fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified material.

Chlorella

The most common use of Chlorella is as a nutritional supplement. As well as being rich in carotenoids and chlorophyll, Chlorella contains vitamin A, all the B’s, C and E, and unlike synthetic forms found in multi-vitamin supplements – in their natural form, and without having to worry about dosage.  Chlorella is packed with minerals including potassium, zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium contains around 60% complete balanced protein. You can use it as tablets or powder, both are equally effective.

Chlorella is a powerful detoxifying food, so when starting always take a smaller amount for the first week, with an adequate intake of pure water. It is possible some new users may not tolerate chlorella – in the event that you experience stomach upset or nausea when taking chlorella, either reduce the amount you are taking or stop taking chlorella completely and seek advice from your health care practitioner.  If pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medications, always consult your health care practitioner before starting on Chlorella.

SuperGrass

Australian Supregrass is made using 100% organic young leaf Barley, Wheat and Alfalfa grasses from the mineral-rich, certified organic soil on the banks of the Murray River in Northern Victoria. The clean, green farms where Australian supergrass is grown are certified organic by The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA).

When combined, these 3 highly alkalising young leaf grasses deliver a broader spectrum of organic nutrients in one perfect blend to energise, alkalise and nourish the body.

Green Calcium

A 100% plant source of calcium from the marine plant Lithothamnium calcareum, Green calcium is naturally rich in calcium, magnesium and 72 other trace minerals important for optimum calcium absorption and bone health.  Green Calcium is the richest natural plant-source of calcium available, is highly alkaline (pH10) and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

One level teaspoon (2.8g) of Green Calcium contains 952mg of elemental calcium in a pure, plant form – 952mg of elemental calcium represents approx 95% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for adults. I give this to Issy in her Green Smoothies – see suggested uses below ….

Suggested Usage: one serve = 2.8g (approx 1 level teaspoon)

  • Adults: use ½ to 1 serve daily
  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding Mothers: use ¾ to 1 ¼ serves daily
  • Children age 1-11 years: use 1/3 of level teaspoon daily

Serving Suggestions: Mix in favourite green smoothie or juice, water or simply add to food.

Green Superfoods

Green superfoods contains Hawaiian Spirulina, Yaeyama Chlorella, Australian Organic Alfalfa and Barleygrass and Organic Marine Plant Minerals.

Green Nutritionals have left out are the ‘filler’ ingredients, such as bulk fibre and insignificant amounts of herbs and synthetic vitamins that provide little to no health benefits ( that your find in other superfoods), ensuring that gram for gram you get the most nutrient-rich and bioavailable superfood

It contains:

  • 33% easily assimilated high quality protein
  • Phycocyanin ( antioxidant for liver and kidney health, very hard to find in foods)
  • Zeaxanthin ( antioxidant for the eyes and brain)
  • Beta Carotene ( antioxidant for skin, eyes, immune system, safe source of vitamin A

What is the difference between a cold pressed juicer and a centrifugal Juicer?

Cold press juicers

Cold press juicers extract juice from produce using a gentle crushing and squeezing action. This ensures that the vital enzymes, nutrients and minerals stay intact. This extraction method is still regarded as the best in the world. In fact, independent research shows that a cold press juicer retains double the nutrients to its centrifugal counterparts.

Benefits of using a cold press juicer…

  • The juice extracted from a cold press juicer is ‘Living Juice’, retaining its nutritional integrity 48-72 hours after extraction.
  • Cold press juicers are completely waste free and versatile kitchen appliances. As well as drinking fresh juice, pulp ejected can be used in composting, cooking, and as pet food.
  • The parts detach easily and cleaning time is reduced significantly as opposed to centrifugal juicers.
  • The low RPM of the motor means that cold press juicers are considerably quieter than centrifugal juicers

Centrifugal juicers

  • Centrifugal juices spin at high speeds, they tend to get less juice and nutrients out and centrafugal juicercan oxidise the juice quite quickly.
  • Centrifugal juicers use internal blades to extract juice, and spin up to 30,000 revs per minute. This pumps air through produce, incurring premature oxidisation.
  • The high-speed and heat generated from the blades compromises the living nutrients and enzymes found in whole fruit and vegetables. This will leave the juice looking pale and the pulp will begin to separate. When separation occurs the vital enzymes, nutrients and minerals found in fruit and vegetables, has depleted from premature oxidisation during the extraction process

How to store Juice…

20131113-165910.jpg

Drinking your juice straight away is best to ensure oxidation does not occur. However we all live busy and lives, and although it is best to drink your juice straight away – not all of us have that luxury!  So here is a little trick if you want to make double the batch and store your juice for the next day.

1. Pour juice into a glass jar and fill it to the very top as close as you can to the lip of the jar.

2. Place the seal place the seal that come with the Ball Mason Jars  come with or you can also use  cling wrap over the top of the jar. Re-using the plastic wrap that coconuts or vegetables come wrapped in, it is a great way of re-use, reduce and recycle.

3. Screw the lid on over the top of the seal/cling wrap and refrigerate straight away. Juice will store for up to 48 hours in the fridge.

The trick is to and not let any air into the jar, as that is where the oxidation occurs!

What is the difference bewteen Juicing and Blending?

I get asked the question a lot.. What is the difference between juicing and blending?

The difference is, when the juice is separated from the pulp, you can easily consume a much larger volume of vegetables than you could by drinking a smoothie containing pulp. The concentration of nutrients is higher per volume in a juice than a smoothie.

Drinking fresh, fibre-free juice (particularly on an empty stomach) eliminates strain on the digestive tract because the juicer has already done most of the digestion work for you, having separated the fibre from the juice. Without fibre to digest, the juice can be efficiently shuttled into your bloodstream within 30 minutes.

A word of caution: When you remove the fiber from the produce, the liquid juice is absorbed into your blood stream quickly. If you are only juicing fruits, this would cause a rapid spike in blood sugar therefore for kids it is always best to include water in their juices and lots of vegetables.

Although juicing is great for delivering concentrated nutrients to the cellular level, it does not replace need for salads and smoothies. A whole food site consisting of raw foods is still essential  to a healthy diet.

Smoothies, blended soups, and blended salads are excellent ways
to get a variety of raw, whole foods with fiber into your daily routine. Because they are filling and substantial due to their fiber content, they help curb the temptation to eat too much cooked food

Try to drink your juice or smoothie straight away. After 15 minutes, light and air will destroy much of the nutrients. If you can’t drink it straight away, transfer to an airtight container until you’re ready like a mason jar. Ball mason jars have lids that actually seal so no air ( when your juice is filled to the brim) can get in and oxidize your juice.
